Dr. Jim Cahalan |
Jim Cahalan is a senior engineer and manager of the Engineering Analysis Department in Argonne’s Nuclear Engineering Division. He is responsible for technical leadership and programmatic guidance of a variety of activities that include engineering simulation and safety analysis of nuclear reactor and fuel cycle facilities and systems, development of innovative nuclear reactor concepts, facility risk assessment and structural analysis, nuclear reactor plant performance analysis, and process modeling for developmental energy technologies.
During his tenure at Argonne, Jim has contributed to a number of liquid metal-cooled fast reactor safety analysis programs to support US Department of Energy reactor development projects, ranging from the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) and the Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant (CRBRP), to Argonne’s Integral Fast Reactor (IFR). Through these experiences, Jim has gained a technical background in modeling thermal, hydraulic, and neutronic phenomena in reactor safety analysis applications.
Jim joined Argonne in 1973 as a graduate student from Purdue University. His educational training includes a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla and MS and PhD degrees in Nuclear Engineering from Purdue University. Jim is a registered professional engineer in the State of Illinois.
