December 3, 2014
At the IAEA Safeguards Symposium in Vienna, Austria, October 20-24, 2014, the IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano, the Deputy Director General for Safeguards Tero Varjoranta, and the Safeguards Division Directors were briefed by Dr. Kevin Veal, Director of Nuclear Safeguards and Security (NNSA/NA-241), on the joint NNSA/EM display:
U.S. DOE SUPPORT TO IAEA & INTERNATIONAL SAFEGUARDS
Leadership and Excellence in Science for Strengthening Safeguards
The NNSA/EM display was designed by Argonne National Laboratory for the NA-241 and DOE Packaging Certification Program (PCP), Office of Packaging and Transportation (EM-33), with contributions from NA-241, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Savannah River National Laboratory.
The EM portion of the display shows how advanced technologies developed by laboratories for DOE PCP, such as ARG-US Radiofrequency Identification (RFID), CommBox, and Remote Area Modular Monitoring (RAMM) tracking and monitoring systems, can be used to enhance Safety, Safeguards, and Security (3S) and maintain continuity of knowledge for nuclear materials in storage and during transport.
