Watch this video on YouTube: Seismic response analyses of the base-isolated building at Tohoku University
Researcher have developed the finite element model for a rubber and steel laminated seismic base isolator. This computer generated animation allows engineers to compare the seismic response of two identical superstructures, one with a traditional foundation and the other with base isolation. Base isolators in the foundation allow the superstructure to move as a rigid body. During a seismic event the superstructure with a traditional foundation experiences significant relative deformation resulting in severe structural damage. The base isolators however reduce structural damage by permitting relative motions between the superstructure and its foundation.
