Proton beam on liquid lithium film experiment for the FRIB stripper
Heavy ion beam accelerators, such as the driver linac for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) located at Michigan State University (MSU), require “charge stripping” to remove electrons from ion beams for efficient acceleration. The FRIB linac will produce intense beams that would destroy conventional strippers, such as carbon foils. To meet this challenge Argonne National Laboratory has developed a stable liquid lithium jet in a vacuum as a liquid charge stripper for FRIB, based on our unique expertise in alkali metal technologies.

Concept of the Li charge stripper
For efficient acceleration of a powerful heavy ion beam in a linac, a thin liquid lithium jet will be formed in the beam line for charge stripping. In this schematic a uranium beam coming from the left will pass through a lithium stripper that strips off electrons from the beam ions to increase the beam charge state from around 34+ to around 68+.
Argonne’s team further tested the liquid lithium stripper to verify if it could handle an intense beam. Argonne’s experiment showed, for the first time, the operation of a liquid lithium stripper under realistic conditions of beam-deposited power, and verified that the liquid lithium film was not perturbed by a high power density beam. The Lithium Stripper System was designed, constructed, and operated at the Argonne Liquid metal EXperiment (ALEX) facility.
