Development of computer models based on Front-Tracking and Lattice-Boltzmann techniques for direct numerical simulation of an internal combustion engine spray in the near-injector region is another focus of the section. When coupled with combustion codes, the spray model will provide the initial conditions for the accurate simulation of a combustion cycle. This work is part of a large project that involves several Argonne divisions. As part of the project, the Argonne's Advanced Photon Source will be used to build an "X-ray Based Engine Research" facility and to combine the experimental and numerical simulation capabilities.
