Building on world-class technologies

XMAT builds on over 35 years of heavy ion acceleration experience at Argonne. The recent ATLAS upgrade has demonstrated the design required for XMAT, greatly reducing the costs of producing MeV/nucleon ion beam energies.

At right are the internal details of the isolated specimen containment, which permits in situ studies of samples under controlled irradiation, strain, and temperature environments, while keeping specimen volumes sufficiently small to minimize radioactive materials inventories.
