The 2013 Molybdenum-99 Topical Meeting was held April 1-4 in Chicago, Illinois at the Embassy Suites
Chicago Downtown/Lakefront Hotel. The meeting was sponsored by the United States Department of
Energy National Nuclear Security Administration’s Global Threat Reduction Initiative and
organized by Argonne National Laboratory.
Throughout the three days of policy and technical sessions, 137 participants from eleven countries attended along with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development – Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD-NEA). The meeting included key public and private sector stakeholders involved in Mo-99 and Tc-99m production and use. Thirty-five of the meeting participants toured the Argonne National Laboratory Mo-99 Production Development Laboratories and Nuclear Energy Exhibit on Friday morning, April 5.
The 2013 Mo-99 Topical Meeting served as a forum to discuss recent developments in the transition to full-cost recovery and the establishment of a reliable supply of Mo-99 produced without the use of HEU. It was also useful for bringing together a wide range of stakeholders and providing an update on progress, experience and a discussion of new ideas and risks. The meeting fostered discussion that helped identify technical, economic, regulatory and political challenges associated with establishing a reliable supply and transitioning to a non-HEU-based Mo-99 production regime.

A Panel and Roundtable Discussion held on April 2, 2013 was moderated by Ron Cameron
of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA). Pictured here (from left to right) are panel speakers
Michael Guastella (Council on Radionuclides and Radiopharmaceuticals, Inc. (CORAR)), Lynne
Fairobent (American Association of Physicists in Medicine), Orhan Suleiman (U.S. Food and
Drug Administration (FDA)), Kevin Crowley (National Academy of Sciences), Alan Kuperman (University
of Texas, Austin) and Ron Cameron (Moderator, NEA).
